Angelo sat on the green, velvet-covered seat of a lovely, carved mahogany side chair. The leather wing chair and the love seat that was covered in a brocade fabric seemed like something Saul might choose to sit on and Angelo didn’t want to be presumptuous by using either one. He imagined he was being a bit silly since, from the way Bruce and George had described Saul, he seemed like an easy-going fellow. However, the setup reminded him of one of the few times he’d been in Martin’s family’s home. Martin’s mother had made a big fuss over her elegant furnishings, of which a similar sofa had been a part. She’d been certain to let Angelo, as well as his brothers and sisters, know they weren’t welcome to use any of the fine pieces to sit on. They had only ever been invited there a few times over the years as part of a church gathering, but the memory had stuck with him.

Angelo started as the door to the study clicked open and the man whom he presumed was Saul entered the room. Angelo shot to his feet, only thinking to grab his newsboy off his head at the last moment. The handsome older man smiled warmly, his eyes crinkling at the corners, his expression friendly and going a long way toward easing Angelo’s nerves.

“You must be Angelo.” He stepped forward and offered his hand. “I’m Saul. It’s wonderful to meet you.”

Angelo accepted Saul’s hand and gave it a solid shake before letting go. He hoped he’d made a good impression the way he’d always tried to do when he’d taken the harvest into town, handling the sales the way his papa had taught him.

“It’s wonderful to meet you too, sir. Thank you for giving me a chance.”

Saul chuckled, gesturing to the very love seat Angelo had been afraid to sit on. As Angelo accepted the unspoken invitation, he made certain to keep his posture straight and to fold his hands in his lap so he wouldn’t fidget. Saul lowered himself on the wing chair opposite Angelo, then crossed his legs.

“So,” Saul began, “tell me a little about yourself before I go into detail regarding the position.”

Angelo proceeded to share with Saul where he was from, how he had arrived in town the day before and that he was seeking steady employment as well as lodgings. He doubted Bruce and George would have mentioned his romantic troubles and he certainly didn’t believe it was an appropriate topic to bring up. He then offered some examples of the types of skills he possessed.

“I’d also like to add, sir, that I’m a very hard worker and don’t mind putting in long hours. Whatever you ask of me, I’ll be glad to do it. And if it’s a task that’s unfamiliar to me, I’m a quick learner and will make sure I know what to do for the next time. I’m very good at following orders, so you’ll never have to worry about me talking back or arguing.
